Hair and Cultural Identity (2012-2013)

Around 2012, I began working with hair as a craft medium to question ideas of authenticity in relation to racial and cultural identity. Is hair a body part, or is it adornment? The brooches I made out of synthetic hair extensions and metal came alive when photographer Kristy Depper helped me to “perform” them by wearing them with matching wigs. In having myself photographed in slightly awkward poses, I am poking fun at contemporary beauty practices, while playing with perceptions of race and identity.
