Worn: Shaping Black Feminine Identity (2014-2015)

“Worn” is an installation commissioned by the Royal Ontario Museum in 2014/15. Consisting of a Victorian mourning dress made of braided hair extensions, and surrounded by cotton bolls, some of which have been stuffed with my own hair, the work was created to address the presence/absence of Africans in Canada’s historical narrative. It is now part of the museum’s permanent collection. For an expanded artist statement, please see the bottom of this page.
